| Girls Kickoff Event - On Wednesday, 8/17 there is a 9/18 hole kickoff event at Twin Lakes. The first tee-time is 12:30pm. The event will have two flights (A and B). The 'A' flight will play 18 holes and the 'B' flight will play 9 holes. The registration deadline is tomorrow (Monday, 8/15). |
| Unless we hear otherwise, these are the girls we will enter: |
18 holes (A flight) - MacKenzie Kim & Jae Jun - Both have confirmed their particiation with me, so they DO NOT need to respond to this e-mail. We have NOT entered Janice Kim or Marria Cho but will do so if they want to play. |
9 holes (B flight) - Antoinette Roland, Jacqueline Hogg, Katie Rouleau, Noelle Brown, Jacqueline Bond, Rachel Hollenbeck, & Gabrielle Zlab. |
| Because of the large number of girls that register for these events, we may not be able to get everyone entered. So, there are three important notes of which everyone should be aware: |
If you are listed in the B flight, you MUST respond to this e-mail saying you want to play. If we don't hear back from you by very early Monday morning, we will NOT enter your name. The entries will be sent out around 7:00am, so please send your confirmation or decline to participate before you go to bed Sunday night. |
We need to rank the players we enter in order of who we want to see entered 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc. We will rank the girls based on practice attendance first & then school year second. |
If you say you're going to play & can't or don't show up & we can't get a replacement for your spot, we will ask that you reimburse the team either $30 (18 holes) or $20 (9 holes) as there are entry fees for this event. |

| Need any new equipment? - An e-mail was sent out yesterday concerning an order we're going to place on Monday, Aug 8 from the TaylorMade-Adidas high school purchase program. Please check your inbox & let us know if you'd like to order something such as shoes, gloves, balls, practice apparel, etc. This will be the ONLY time will we will place a team order, so if you want to hop on-board & share the shipping & handling amongst your teammates & take advantage of the discounts, please get your request in by the evening of Sunday, Aug 7. |
| What do you have in your bag? - We all know to have the essentials such as clubs, balls, tees, gloves, etc. But do you have some of the other things that manydon't think about? Take a look at the checklist below & make a shopping list: |
Sharpie or other marker - You need one of these to mark your ball. While you should always know the brand of your ball & the number on the ball, it's a must to have an identifying or unigue mark on it as well. A dot or two, line, or your initials will do just fine. |
Divot repair & ball-mark - You absolutely need both of these during practice & play. The general rule is that when you get to the green, you should repair your ball-mark & one more. With all the play Westfields gets from recreational players, we should do our part to keep the course in great shape. If you don't know how to repair a ball-mark, ask someone. Westfields has free divot-repairs in the proshop if you need one. A ball-mark is any flat object you use to mark your ball on the green. You can get a repair tool with a ball-mark attached. |
Golf umbrella - You don't need this everytime out, but it'd be a great idea to bring one along just in case you may need it. You can always take it out of you bag before play & place it in coach's cart for use if the weather gets dicey. There's also something called a "drizzle-stick" that's a mini-umrella you slide into your bag to cover your clubs. This isn't an essential, but it's an option to keep your clubs dry. |
Extra towels - You should have at least one towel (if not two) attached to your bag. These are used to keep your clubs & ball clean & sometimes to dry your hands. Plan to bring a few extra on days where rain is one the menu. If you need a towel, let us know & we can get you one as we've got extras from the Boosters' tournament. |
Rain gloves - Many of us don't think about these until it's too late. Get a pair & leave them in your bag for days when it's wet. They are available on the TaylorMade-Adidas website for $15.00 (regular price = $24.99). It's also a good idea to have an extra regular glove in case yours gets torn, worn-out, wet, or lost on the course. |
Range-finder - This is an expensive item, but it's a great luxury if you want to improve your game. it's also a great tool to help speed up play as you don't need to search for yardage markers or pace off yardage. Some of our tournaments & matches allow them, some don't. If you do plan to get one, make sure it's tournament legal (meaning it doesn't measure slope or wind speed). |
Snacks - Have something in your bag that you can snack on if you get hungry. We suggest granola bars, trail mix, or energy bars. Try to stay away from things that will melt or leave your hands sticky. Be weary of food with high amounts of sodium as it will pull water from your muscles & leave you dehydrated, bloated, & sluggish. We highly suggest almonds, but not the salted ones. They've got flavored ones on the market that are lower in sodium. Consider flavors such as cocoa-roast, cinnnamon or just plain. |

| Summer 2011 News & Notes: |
| Here are some of the highs, and unfortunately lows, that we saw come to pass over this past summer: |
Congratulations to Noori Hyun on his decision to attend & play for University of Michigan in the fall of 2011. Noori was offered a very impressive schlarship to join the Wolverine golf team & recently made it official by signing his letter of intent to accept the scholarship. |
Chris Song led wire-to-wire & wins the IJGT at Westfields Golf Club by carding a 77-73 in the 36-hole event. Noori Hyun was closing late in the second round, but finishes 2 shots back, all alone in 2nd place. |
Congratulations to Chris Upham on his acceptance to Coastal Carolina Univeristy. Upon his acceptance, he was offered a scholarship to participate in the school's PGA Golf Management program. In addtion, Chris plans to compete on CCU's club team. |
On May 5th, team alum Nick Franca passed away after a six-year battle with a very rare form of cancer. Nick graduated from CVHS in 2009 & went on to attend Lynchburg College in southern VA. For information on remembrance services & his life, please visit the Caring Bridge website. |
Shaan Kololgi finished in 3rd place at the Jr.MAPGA's Reston GC Classic at Reston National Golf Club. Shaan carded a solid 77 to finish just 3 shots out of the lead & 1 shot back from 2nd. |

| The 7th Annual Wildcat Classic is scheduled for June 7, 2011 at Westfields Golf Club. The event is sponsored by General Dynamics & hosted by the Wildcat Athletic Boosters. Each Varsity team at CVHS has been asked to complete a few different tasks to make the the tournament a success. |
| (1) |
Each team must recruit a foursome to play in the tournament. We've typically had a few teams represent the golf team. Right now, we've got one that consists of Coach Bigus, his father & two others. If you'd like to put together a foursome, please let Coach Bigus know as soon as possible so we can get your foursome registered. Payment is due no later than the day of the tournament. |
| (2) |
Each team must recruit a hole/tee sponsor. We've already got this more than covered, but if you know anyone who's looking to get some good press, let Coach Bigus know & we'll get them recognized on the tournament website. |
| (3) |
Each team needs to supply door/raffle prizes. We've already got a few donated, but we need each member of the team to go out & get something donated to use as a prize. We're looking for things like gift cards from local restuarants or other items donated from local businesses. |

| Skyline Invitational - All in all, it was a pretty good day. We weren't able to walk away with the top prize, but second place isn't too bad considering the windy conditions & the fact that four of us hadn't ever played the course before. Noori & Chris Song were the only two of the six with prior knowledge of the course. Noori saw it over two years ago & Chris saw it earlier this season at the the Licklider. The final results of the tournament left us hold the runner-up plaque with a total stroke count of 311 - 6 back of the winning team, Sherando. Leading the team was Chris, who fired a 4-over 75 (par 71). Following close behind was Noori (76) & Brett Green with a career-best 79. Newcomer Janice Kim shot an 81 in her tournament debut. Although their scores weren't used in the final tally, MacKenzie Kim & Garrett Leavitt played great. Big Mac shot an 82 & Blondie (the nickname Coach Arthur from John Handley gave him) shot an 83. All in all, I think everyone had a good time. Plus, there was a "twist" to the final results that we'd rather not put in print. So, if you think you can handle the truth, see me or one of the kids who played to get the story. |

| Match vs. Chantilly - Wow, what a match. We were tied through four scores (153-153), then we lost on the tie-breaker using the 5th score (43 vs 46), then we won after Chantilly's coach re-added the four best scores (153-156). Nonetheless, it was our best match this season. Noori Hyun led the way with a 2-under 33, while newcomer Janice Kim shot a 3-over 38 & Chris Song added a 4-over 39. Brett Green scored in a second straight match with a 8-over 43. Playing in the 8th spot, Garrett Leavitt carded a season-best 6-over 41. We couldn't use his score as he wasn't declared as one of our top six at the start of the match. |

| Match-play begins with a win! - The Varsity played it's first match of the season yesterday against Herndon. The Concorde District match was played at Westfields Golf Club & resulted in a 155-156 triumph. The low round of the day beonged to Noori Hyun, who fired an even-par 35. Following close behind him was sophomore Keon ho "Chris" Song by carding a 1-over-par 36. Rounding out the scoring for the day were Shaan Kololgi (41) & Brett Green (43). |

| Bryan Gunter Memorial - After slipping to second in 2009, the Varsity team took back the Gunter title from a resilient Loudoun Valley team. The final margin of victory was only two strokes after finishing round 1 at Winchester Country Club with a 6 stroke lead. Team members scoring in round 1 were Noori Hyun (65), Chris Upham (73), Marria Cho (83), & Keon ho Song (83). Round two was contested at Rock Harbor, which proved to be a much more demanding track. Noori fired a 3-under 69 to follow his 7-under performance from Thursday. Keo ho Song rebounded with a 77, while Chris Upham had a great back nine to scramble for a 79. Freshman MacKenzie Kim scored an 85 to follow up her 83 from the Stallion Invitaion the previous week. In the individual category, Noori shot 65-69 (-10) to earn his third straight Billy Phillips award for the top individual player.Chris Upham rounded out the medalist podium with a 73-79 (+9) garnering him a 5th-place finish. |
| Girls' Northern Region Ice-Breaker - After rain prevented play on Wednesday, the girls took to Twin Lakes Friday afternoon. Antoinette Roland carded the low round of the day for the Lady Wildcats with a solid 51. Antoinette finished tied for 5th in the 9-hole flight. Gina Masters & Jacqueline Hogg shot 57 & 75, respectively. Sadly, Katie Rouleau took an errant shot to the hand from a drive off the 17th tee while playing the 11th hole. She played two more holes after receiving some medical attention, but the swelling took over & prevented her from finishing. So, please give her your best if you have the chance. |

Sharpie or other marker - You need one of these to mark your ball. While you should always know the brand & make of ball you're playing (i.e. Titleist Pro-V1), as well as the number on the ball (usually 1-4) , it's a must to have an identifying or unigue mark on it as well. A dot or two, line, or your initials will do just fine. If you want to get creative, there's a company out of Fall Church that makes a personal imprinting system that only requires the use of a Sharpie to use. Coach Bigus saw them being sold down in Myrtle Beach. You may want to check them out: www.tin-cup.com |
Divot repair & ball-mark - You absolutely need both of these during practice & play. The general rule is that when you get to the green, you should repair your ball-mark (no matter how small) & one more (from someone who wasn't as considerate). With all the play Westfields gets from recreational players, we should do our part to keep the course in great shape. I know the management appreciates it. If you don't know how to repair a ball-mark, ask coach or a teammate. Westfields has free divot-repairs in the proshop if you need one. A ball-mark is any flat object (such as a coin) you use to mark your ball on the green so other can putt w/o distractions or obstructions. You can get a repair tool with a ball-mark attached. |
