Chapter 1: Team Cohesion |
| Team cohesion – or what is more commonly referred to as team unity – is one of the fundamental blocks upon which effective individual and team performance is built. Through my experience, I have found that cohesion is often recognized and referred to as a dynamic process that is reflected in a group’s tendency to stick together while pursuing its goals and objective. A cohesive group will adapt and evolve to achieve whatever goals and objectives have been established, even when they are modified or changed. | |
| Chapter 2: Leadership | |
| Are you a leader? If you are, how do you know? If you’re not, what makes you feel this way? One way or the other, what do you think you makes a leader? On every successful team, you will find a leader. In fact, you may find more than one. While some may lead by example, some may lead with the spoken word. Whatever the case may be, a good leader will inspire commitment, loyalty, confidence, and extraordinary performance in others. | |
| Chapter 3: Self-confidence | |
| There is a sport cliché from the world of golf that makes reference to something you need by saying you should “have that club in your bag.” Well, let’s say that self-confidence is one of those clubs you really do need in your bag. By definition, self-confidence reflects the opinion you have of your own ability and self-worth. Besides determining how far you go in sport, self-confidence will play a part in determining how far you go in life. | |
| Chapter 4: Motivation | |
| What motivates you? Do you know? Are you motivated by external rewards such as trophies and acclaim? Does your motivation come from within, knowing that you gave it your all, improved, and helped the team succeed? You probably have a good idea what it means to be motivated, but do you know how motivation can be developed and sustained over a lifetime? | |
| Chapter 5: Goal-Setting | |
| Sorry to say, but goal-setting is not as simple as saying “let’s win the championship,” or “let’s do our best.” A goal-setting plan needs to address several key concerns to make sure all the bases are covered. Here are some guidelines that one should follow: | |
| Chapter 6: Concentration | |
| At some point in your career, you will experience a break or lapse in your concentration. Unfortunately, these lapses will lead to a decline in performance. This decline may lead to loss in your self-confidence, decreased self-efficacy, and an increase in self-doubt. Fortunately, athletes at any level of competition can learn to minimize these lapses. In fact, learning to do so will be a key proponent to achieving and maintaining optimal levels of performance and enhancing the entire sport experience. | |
